S-video to RCA?

Using Mozilla/4.61 [en] (Win98; I):

I have a 5x DVD player for my PC that I purchased but I lost the S-video to RCA cable that was included with the drive. The card only has S-video output (no composite). I wanted to run a cable to my TV, but it does not have an S-video input. When I went to radio shack to purchase one, the guy I asked looked at me like I was crazy. I got an adapter that looked like what I needed from a friend, but when I hooked it up, the picture was in black and white! What's the deal? Can I make one of these things? Thanks.
