I didn't have to drill through carpet because I have hardwood floors. I currently do not have any baseboards in my living room so I just drilled as close to the wall as I could. I'll cover the hole as best as I can when I put the baseboards in. As for the hole in the wall for the speaker, I'm still looking for something to dress it up with, but I haven't had much time. I think a cover plate for a cable TV connection should do the trick.
