My experience has been there is a difference between the two.

When I calibrate using the Radio Shack SPL against the internal test tones of the Denon 3200 - the center and rear surrounds are 2-3db louder than when I configure using Video Essentials.

I can't say which is the "more accurate" of the two - however I feel the rear surrounds are just too loud when using the internal test tones of the Denon.

One test to try is to calibrate to your receiver, then play the "walk around the room/test noise" on VE to evaluate the blending of the channels.
