Hiss from Sony DVD-S550P decoder?

This test is to RULE OUT the either the DVD or the receiver.

Before you condemn the DVD deck, try this: connect one of the "quiet" devices (i.e. CD, VCR) to two of the "DD 5.1" inputs (i.e. front L/R). Play something, anything, at "movie volume" and see if you still get ophidian accompaniment.

If you DO NOT get "snakey" with the CD or VCR, then you probably need an external decoder OR another DVD brand with discrete outputs. If you DO get "snakey" with the CD or VCR, then the HK is at fault - get a new receiver with a built-in DD decoder.

That's all that immediately comes to mind. If anyone else can devise any other tests, please "type up". :)
