Normal level of hiss ?

Using Mozilla/4.51 [en] (Win95; I):
I just bought a new preamp (Chiro) and
I noticed that I can hear the hiss
coming from each speaker up to 3-4 ft
distance. From my listening position
(13 ft), I can hardly notice it, unless
if it is very quiet.
Is this kind of hiss normal ?
Should I worry that something is not
working right inside my preamp ?
I am also curious on the level of hiss
in your system, how far away from
your speakers can you still hear it ?
(for comparisons).
