The DC-1 may not be Lex's latest and greatest, but it's still a great preamp. You won't be able to even come close to matching it's performance with anything else in the $2000 price point for surround processing. The only way to better it would be to get, IMO, either a Casa Nova or a DC-2, unless you are willing to exceed your stated upper limit of $5k.

You can upgrade to v3 software for $300 from that, so you'd be getting the same surround algorithms used on the DC-2 and MC-1 for $2000.
