Methinks you need an "exterminator" for your excessive "snakiness".

In a good system, there should be NEAR-ZERO "hiss" with ZERO INPUT and the volume level "cranked".

Do the "snakes" occur with EVERY input selection or just some? if it occurs on EVERY input, the preamp is most likely at fault. Just for fun: DISCONNECT the preamp from the amp and "crank" the amp (no other input!) - do you still get "serpentined" or not? if so, your AMP needs looking at; if not, the PREAMP is definitely at fault.

Another thing to try is SHORTING-OUT the preamp INPUTS and see if your system still "speaks with forked tongue". If so, the preamp is DEFINITELY at fault; if not, time to examine ALL COMPONENTS plugged into the system.

Finally (and I REALLY HATE to suggest this) try DIFFERENT (more expensive?) INTERCONNECTS. You MIGHT (big might!) have a "shield fault" in one (or more) cables, resulting in a "super-high impedance" feed, picking-up the "viper station".

Anyhoo, that's my few bytes. Perhaps one of the resident Gurus (Stu'? Al? Nigel?) will have more/better information/suggestions.

Ken
