Basic question about sound.

Using Mozilla/4.5 [en] (WinNT; U):

I have a very basic question about amount and quality of sound. If you have 2 speakers driven at the same wattage as 1 speaker, is the loudness doubled?
If this is true then is there any disadvantage to hooking up two speakers in series to get a louder sound, other than the impedence is doubled? It seems that some people are doing this for their subs, but is there anything that makes it undesirable to use in full range speakers?
