Toshiba SD-2108 DVD/CD Player???

Also some DVD players will read CD-RW's but not CD-R's and you are correct that the Sony players will read both, because of their dual laser pick-up system (not actually dual lasers) - one optimised for CD's and the other for DVD. My Theta DaViD (the transport of which is Pioneer sourced) will read CD-RW's no problem - I have recorded several myself on a Marantz CDR-640 and played them back on the Theta with no problem. Despite the manual saying that it will not play CD-R's, it will in fact play some brands of CD-R, namely those with a more reflective surface, the silver, yellow/gold and lighter green varieties - which reflect the red laser better than the darker green dyes in other discs. For example Sony CD-Rs play quite happily, TDKs get rejected. I don't think there has been any deception about this. As far as I recall the DVD spec only calls for basic Red Book audio CD compatiblity, not the recordable varieties, probably because of the wide variation in types of the recordable media.
