The absolutely essential thing that you need for AC-3 compatibilty is an AC-3 digital audio output on the DSS receiver. Older receivers had digital outputs but did not have the necessary internal software to be able extract the AC-3 data from the satellite signal and output it to a digital output. The newer RCA and Sony receivers have AC-3 compatible digital outputs - and as far as I know only the higher end receivers.

As for other features, higher priced models usually have a better user interface, the ability to be controlled by RF from a second room etc. I am not aware of any having on-board AC-3 decoders.

So, briefly just make sure that thre receiver you get as an AC-3 (it may also be called Dolby Digital) digital output (it will probably be optical rather than coaxial). If the store tries to fob you off with a receiver that only has analogue outputs, walk out, they don't know what they are talking about.

You should also be aware that at the moment only a few PPV movies are actually broadcast in AC-3/Dolby Digital, regular TV programming is still DPL matrixed stereo. But even for that, the digital connection will likely be better - the DACs in your Yamaha will almost certainly be better than those in the satellite receiver.
