Strange goings-on with Magnepan

Posted by Crackin' Good [IP: 206.155.214.16] on May 22, 1999 at 18:10:14
Using Mozilla/2.0 (compatible; MSIE 3.02; AK; Windows 95):

I'm having a strange audio situationoccuring in my listening room. My room is about 22 x 25, carpet + linoleum floors, standard ceilings. My maggie MMGs are 7 feet apart and 4 feet from the back wall. I've managed to clear out everything from between them (amp cart off to the side wall), as well as beside them. Here's where the weirdness begins; the "sweet spot" is not 8 feet, not 10 feet in front of speakers, not 15 feet, but 6 INCHES in front of the speakers! sitting on a pillow 6 inches in front, and directly between, the speakers. This puts me 4 1/2 feet from the "speaker" wall. The speakers sound worlds better from this postion. My problem is, my subwoofer is now onlu about 4 feet away from me, and because of those long honkin' low frequency waves, I'm getting very little bass response. Should I invest in a long set of RCAs and stick the sub on the other side of the room? Put up some foam padding?

I have one other question as well: I was looking at the TDS passive AT for my system. I have a NAD C340 connected to a Musical Fidelity X-10D connected to an Onkyo C340 player. Would this connect this AT between the CD player and the amp? Or should I just blow my $200 on a CD player with a digital out? Or save my money and be able to make my loan payment this month? =)

Thanks for your help
