A question about pre-amps from an audio novice

No. All the preamp will do is:

1) allow you LEVEL CONTROL of signal inputs
2) allow you to ATTACH MULTIPLE DEVICES to the amp and switch between them
3) provide necessary amplification and equalization for a MAGNETIC PHONO (i.e. "groovy" turntable).

The rating of an amp is that - the MAXIMUM POWER you can get. You can, OTOH, OVERDRIVE the amp's input which will result in signal clipping and mucho distortion, which can BLOW-OUT YOUR SPEAKERS!
