1.If the dd decoder is in the reciever, the extra functions of an ac3-ready dvd player are meerly [sic] just for comfort, and do not play that big of a role in sound/picture quality.. Am I totally wrong with this assumption?

Depends what you mean by extra functions. Certainly DD (AC-3) decoding in the DVD player is redundant if your receiver can do that job - you should use the receiver to do that.

2.What kind of outputs should I look for on the back of my dvd player? Since my receiver has a dd decoder on it, is there special output/input wire schemes that are superior?

As DD is a digital format you will need a digital connection between DVD player and receiver - DVD players have either optical (Toslink) or coaxial outputs, some have both. If you only use the stereo analogue outputs you will not get the DD signal to your receiver, only downmixed Dolby Prologic. It is generally considered that coaxial digital connections are better, but I am hard pressed to tell the difference.

One other thing, make sure that you calibrate the output levels on your receiver using a sound meter (about $35 from Radio Shack) it is almost impossible to do it by ear and consider getting hold of the Video Essentials DVD so you can set up your TV for best video reproduction.

If you need some help on digital connection formats, check out my article on the main SMR site, link below.
