I saw one of those Vampire gold-plated Toslink cables at the store today, and my first thought when I noticed the 'gold-pleted' part was the same: what for?

I figure that if the receiver and transmitter are happy (i.e. no impedance mismatch), and the cable is well shielded against RF noise, then it ought to be fine. So far, no one has been able to give me a good reason to believe otherwise.
