Universal remotes: are they really safe?

Using Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; MSN 2.6; Windows 95):

I just bought a new Denon receiver that came with a "learning" remote, but I've found that it's not fully compatible with all of my other A/V components. Also, I prefer to store it away since it is the main and only control for all functions on the new receiver.

Anyway, I invested in a "universal" remote control that does support basic functions for all of my equipment. However, I've noticed in a few cases that pressing certain buttons on the control do not activate the exact features as labeled, i.e., phono button activates tape deck on the receiver.

Other than creating some confusion, can anyone tell me if this might cause any possible equipment problem or damage? It's my belief that the remote control simply transmits a signal, and it should not cause any damage (if the receiver recognizes the signal from the phono button to mean tape deck, then this is just fine and no more an issue than the reciever not recognizing a signal at all). Nonetheless, it concerns me.

Sorry if this seems a bit silly, but i just don't want to take any chances with my new Denon--no matter how small!

Thanks,

Jason
