Universal remotes: are they really safe?

No, there won't be any "damage" from the universal. IN fact, it's a VERY GOOD IDEA to "put away" expensive (and "dangerous" remotes) like those that come with equipment, and "replace" them with one or more "universals".

However, you have discovered the problems with "universals": you don't get "all the functions" AND you get occasional "cross-commanding". However, these are mere annoyances rather than "life threatening" problems for the equipment.

IN conclusion: if you do get a "universal", see if you can get one that has a little "programming" capability (i.e. key reassignment, etc.) so you can possibly recover some functions.
