What to listen to when selecting equipment?

Hi all,

I am rather new to this forum and I hope to learn alot. My system currently consists of a Sony GA8ES tuner(I don't like it very much), Yahmaha CD player, and JM Lab Cobalt 807 speakers. The system is used for music most of the time and theater occasionaly. I did not listen to very much music when I was selecting the amp and CD player, which is why I think I am unimpressed with them. However I was much more careful when buying the speakers. I found a good highend shop and listened for several hours. I brought with me Jimi Hendrix Greatest hits, some Pink Floyd, Led Zeplin's greates hits, Devil in a Blue Dress soundtrack and a Vazaldi CD to listen to. Now my question is, are there certain CD's which are really good for testing/comparing equipment? When I am listening are there any special things I should be listening for?

Also, I am going to be buying a subwoofer soon as my system is currently lacking in the low end. I am trying to choose between the Velodyne HGS 10 and the the Sunfire True Subwoofer. Are there certain CD's that are good for comparing Subs?

Thanks,

Juan Bruce
