Audio / Video lag during DVD playback

Posted by Eric Crawford [IP: 167.79.91.99] on July 20, 1999 at 13:13:49
Using Mozilla/3.01 (Win95; I):

Has anyone out there experienced sudden lag between the video image and soundtack during DVD playback? I was recently watching the movie "Twister" on DVD. About 2/3 of the way through, the audio tracks began to lag behind the image by a half a second - making dialouge look as if it were dubbed out of sync. I stopped the movie and began playing again, and the video/audio became syncronized perfectly again. I played the same scene over with no problem.

The movie was being played in DD. I am using a digital optical cable to feed the audio into my receiver, and RCA cable to feed the video (through the receiver, then to the television) The copy of Twister that I own is the THX version (I don't know that there are other versions) This is the only time that this has occurred.

I wouldn't normally worry too much about one incident, but I am reaching the end of the exchange period for most of my equipment, and if a hardware problem is suspected, I would much rather have a unit replaced than be without it for several weeks. (I have only had these toys for a couple of weeks, it would be a real drag to send it to a service center, just when I am beginning to enjoy it!)

Has anybody else seen anything like this? If so, what would be the most likely culprit? Could it be a "fluke", some once-in-a-blue-moon glitch with DD? or, would a problem with either he DVD player or the receiver be suspected? Or could I have just gotten ahold of a quirky copy of "Twister"? (Which seems unlikely, considering that the problem did not appear consistently.) Should I worry about this at all?

ANY help, advice, information would be very appreciated. If I am in the wrong forum, please let me know, and I'll move this posting. (I put it here because I didn't know where to begin.)

Thanks
