This does seem to be a problem with some DVD players, most notably some of the recent Sony models. It sounds like a problem with the MPEG decoding engine, but I am not sure whether any manufacturer who has acknowledged the problem has issued a fix.

I would get in touch with the tech support group at the manufacturer, explain the problem (tell them you have seen it mentioned on the internet as a wider problem than just your unit) and ask them if there is a firmware fix available.
