Without question, the Sunfire Mk. II. It is the lowest reaching subwoofer while doing it cleanly for the money ($1,300) I've heard, and have the pleasure of owning. Compared to the Velodyne series that copied the Sunfire concept, it sounds ever-so-slightly cleaner then the Velodyne HGS-12 and performs quite a bit better then the '10. Both of which costing progressively more money from the '10 to the '12. The Sunfire operates unobtrusively - it usually likes being placed in a corner out of the way of things. But the sound is extremely dynamic, low in frequency, and incredibly clear (if you have the equipment capable of it, and know how to set it up). One listen to the opening track of Rusted Root's "When I Awoke" aptly proves this. Not every sub. is capable of separating all of the textures in this densely populated percussive piece while providing the prerequisite visceral-slam and rhythm that accompanies it. Velodyne states roughly 1% distortion for their subs., what they DON'T tell you however, is the low volume it takes to get that stat. One may be able to get a 5" midrange to do 20Hz at 1% distortion but you wouldn't be able to hear the output of the driver. This is not to knock Velodyne's subwoofers, many of them are EXCELLENT, there's just better for less money!
