How close is too close?

Posted by Chris B. [IP: 199.174.241.34] on December 31, 1998 at 02:19:15:

It is living room re-arranging time and for my wife to remain civil to me, she wants my speakers placed closer to our television set, or she wants them gone. Well, I don't want them gone, but they are not sheilded units.

I have always read or heard that if you put a speaker near your TV set and you got no picture discoloration or distortion than your placement was okay. I placed my speakers (8 inch woofer with Lineaum ribbon tweeter) about 4 to 5 inches from my set and noticed no problems. Am I on shaky ground? Is there any cumalative effect from having them in close proximity over a period of time?
I know this is a basic question, but figured I needed confirmation or denial of what I have heard. My 36 inch Toshiba is an investment that has to last a long, looonnnggg, time (darn that HDTV anyway!)

Thanks for any input,
Chris
