Special probelm with rear speakers placement

Posted by Roy Miu [IP: 203.116.1.241] on January 08, 1999 at 10:30:52:

My rear surround speakers are currently placed on the floor behind the couch, which is the main listening/viewing area, and firing towards the ceiling. The rear surround speakers is a pair of Mission 751 - bookshelf.

The reasons for this peculiar placement are due to my odd shaped room and lack of available space to mount them on walls or put them on stands. There is 9x13 square feet of space behind the couch but it is reserved for the dining area.

My question is should the rear surround speakers be placed in this manner? Will it mess up the rear surround "soundstage"? It might be useful to note my receiver is capable of DD and DTS. Is there any alternative other than relocating my AVs to another room or move to another apartment more condusive for AV enjoyment?

Thanks in advance.
