The only thing I can guess here is that you are hearing the roll-off frequencies. When the "small" setting is selected it starts a frequency roll-off at 90hz. "Roll-Off" means that the level of the frequencies below 90hz is reduced - not eliminated - at a particular rate. In the case of my 2092 that rate is 24db per octave. I forget how many octaves there are below 90hz that are audible but the point is that the sound is not eliminated, it is just gradually reduced. The reason for this is that by rolling the sound off, it helps to blend the main channels in with the sub.
One problem here is that the Yamaha's manuals are woefully lacking. If anyone from Yamaha is reading this, at least include a more detailed supplement so those of us who care can better understand what the receiver is doing. For now though, just keeping trying all the combinations until you find something you like.

: I hope you can also help me setup my Yamaha RX-V995 receiver and a Paradigm PS1000 sub-woofer.

: My sub-woofer is connected to the sub-out of my receiver. The main L/R, center speakers are set to small and the LFE is set to SW. According to the user manual, all frequencies under 90 hz will be routed to the sub-woofer.

: However, when a frequency sweep is made with my sub-woofer switched off, I can still hear output between 45 - 90 hz from my main speakers. The frequency sweep was played on my CD player and the receiver was set to normal 2 channel stereo without any DSP program.

: My question is what did I do wrong? Could it be the settings I made are only for surrond playback and not for stereo playback? How should I setup my receiver to route only frequencies below 90 hz to the sub-woofer?

: Thanks in advance.
