The important thing, IMO, is to trust your own ears. Listen to different speakers, both within your budget and well out of your budget--it's great to establish a reference (although somewhat dangerous to the household finances). Use a variety of source material: movies are great for testing the dynamics of a system, but if you're going to listen to music as well, test with some of your CD's.

Remember too that rarely, if ever, does a speaker sound the same in your home as in the store. Get an in-home trial of some type--established dealers will often give you a 30 day return policy. Don't be afraid to use it.
