Required Cabinet Space Around Subwoofer?

Another question re my cabinet design. Would a downfiring subwoofer's performance be significantly affected were it to be on the floor but enclosed in a cabinet space about one inch all around larger than the subwoofer cabinet itself (the cabinet open to the front of course), and also presenting the side of the subwoofer to the open area rather than the normal wider subwoofer front (turned 90 degrees on a vertical axis)?
