powered speakers, and impedance Posted by Paul on September 28, 1998 at 21:57:58: Hi! I'm interested in purchasing a pair of Paradigm 70P speakers, which have a built in amplifier for the low frequencies. Essentially, the tower speaker has a built-in subwoofer. You connect a receiver up to the 70P, just the way you would a regular non-powered loudspeaker. I was thinking how it's great that my receiver will only have to power the mids and highs. However, now I'm realizing that my receiver will still be trying to reproduce the entire frequency range and it will still be affected by a low impedance dip in the mid-bass region which will require more current. (I don't know this for sure, but other Paridigm speakers using 2 drivers for the bass, usually dip down to 4.5 ohms around 150Hz or so). Anyway, am I correct in thinking that I'll still need a high powered, high current amp for these speakers, even though they have a built-in amp for the low frequencies?
