Which one would be better to use for a sub?

I have an Onkyo 828THX receiver and a Velodyne powered subwoofer, on the back of the Onkyo there is a sub output and a sub preout. My question is: which one would be better to put the sub in, the output or preout and why? Another question, there is an internal crossover in the Onkyo and a crossover on the sub, which one would be better to use? Thanks in advance.
