5 speakers, sub & AC-3

Using Mozilla/4.5 [en] (Win98; I):

I live in India, where we have very little choice in home theatre equipment. I was offered the Yamaha RX-V793 & Bose AM10 II speakers for the equivalent of $1400/-.

From what little I know, the Bose speakers aren't up to scratch, and the Yamaha receiver is an old model, so I am considering buying better equipment from the U.S. and bringing it in myself.

Any recommendations for a complete set-up (5 speakers, sub, and AC-3, DTS amp) for between $1500 and $1700?

I was also wondering what the "Front Effect Channel" was? And what is meant when it says 7 Channel (like in the Yamaha DSP-A1), I always thought it was two front, two rear surround, one centre & one sub.
