Rear surround suggestions?
Posted by Philip Brandes [IP: 205.188.200.26] on March 26, 1999 at 21:39:05 In Reply to: Rear surround suggestions? posted by David Chiang on March 26, 1999 at 20:34:43: David, One thing that helps in this situation is the diffuse/reflected nature of dipole sound--it is inherently different in timbre from fronts, so sticking with the same line isn't as critical. B&W does make some dipoles with full HF extension, the SCM 8--pricey, but they should work well with the CDMs. For a little more, consider the Aerial SR-3s--these are switchable bipole/dipoles, so you can experiment. They also let you "steer" the dipole null by adjusting the relative volumes of the front/rear drivers (very cool for tricky placement situations). The sound of Aerials has always reminded me of B&Ws, maybe it's the Kevlar cones. You might also look at Snell. The more affordable NHT and M&K lines are really voiced more forward, but their dipoles may be okay since your listening as much to the room as to the drivers. Hope this helps, Philip Brandes
