Well, on top would be disastorious. That would ruin all your tapes. The distance depends on magnet weight and power.... the PW-2200 probably has a huge magnet... but may have shielding... find out if it has magnetic shielding, then it should be at least 2 feet away, no shield--keep it far away.... my klipsch subwoofer caused bad results for my computer's HD
