speaker buzzing, ohms mismatch, please help
Posted by Tom Hicks [IP: 209.91.1.131] on March 29, 1999 at 23:01:12 I am experiencing several problems with my current pro-logic system: 1) I get considerable buzzing from my center channel speaker. 2) My rear channel speakers are silent when I start my system until I "pop" them on by turning up the volume quite a bit. After they "kick in", they seem to function fine. 3) my center channel also occasionaly cuts out. My (clearly not high end) system is as follows: Reciever: JVC RX-817VTN Pro-Logic(105 watts to front and center, 25 watts to rear channels, all driven into 8 ohms) Front: Bose 2.2 shelf speakers (8 ohms) Center: Cerwin Vega HT-CTR (4 ohms - I know this is mismatched to the receiver) Rear: Acoustic Research 208V shelf speakers Sub: Velodyne VA-810 Here are my questions (please help): 1) Is my 4 ohm center speaker/ 8 ohm reciever causing any or all of these problems? Could it have permanently damaged any of my components? 2) What about the speaker buzz, could that be caused by other factors? 3) Based on my components, what are the weakest points in my system? What should I upgrade first? 4) My friend has offered to set me up with a Pioneer Dolby Digital reciever. Does Pioneer make decent receivers? How much better is Dolby Digital? I apologize for asking so many questions, I have a lot to learn. Thanks in advance for any advice, Tom
