Tom,

I suspect you have a problem with your receiver itself. Using a 4 ohm center channel speaker should not be a problem, however I would make a switch and put the ARs up front (cleaner sounding than the Bose) and put the Bose back as surrounds, and make use of their diffuse soundfield by having the tweeters face outward.

Dolby Digital is the way to go if you replace the JVC. Personally I put Pioneer and JVC equal on my list. When you switch to Dolby Digital you will be able to use a feature known as bass management in which you can set the receiver to filter the bass from your speakers as needed and route bass to the subwoofer. This would allow you to run your little ARs (I have 2 pairs of them myself for surround) without over-driving their 5" woofers.

As for weak links, at some point you should upgrade all of your speakers, but I recommend you spend as much as you can afford on a good Dolby Digital receiver such as a Yamaha or Denon. No matter how good your speakers are, you will get as good of sound as your electronics will allow - and as you buy better speakers, they will be more revealing.

Happy shopping!

Alan
