Tom,

Also keep in mind that your JVC might have a simple problem that could be repaired at low cost. Many hum problems are the result of a bad ground - ditto for channels that "kick in" when you bump up the volume. Before you ditch the JVC for next to nothing as non-working, an opinion from a reputable repair shop might save you money. You could simply have a bad ribbon cable connection or loose PC board ground screw... but do let the shop know to keep the costs down.

On the market these days there are differences in receivers and their intended market. Some brands are truly entry level, most are "middle of the road" and some are a good step above. Pioneer and JVC are both "middle of the road" while Yamaha, Harmon Kardon and Denon are a step above in many respects. While a long running fan of Yamaha, I have found H/K products to be better sounding but much costlier to buy.

The only tie you usually find between brands is that most companies sub out their product, and from time to time 2 brands will be very similar. H/K and the older Sherwoods (not Newcastle) was a classic example, and Sherwood was a entry brand! Another example is Aiwa, which is owned by Sony.

But back to your question about how much better, yes there really is a difference between brands.

Alan
