Subwoofer hookup question

Using Mozilla/4.5 [en] (Win98; U):

Is it possible to hook up a powered car subwoofer to a home system? I have an idea but i dont know if it would work. First instead of a car battery i would splice a power supply for a portable radio that has a 12 volt power output, then hook it up to the power input on the sub. Then hook a rca cable to my reciever from the Subwoofer out plug into the sub. This should work but i need your help.
