Subwoofer fidelity question
Posted by Martin Grill [IP: 205.152.199.2] on April 26, 1999 at 12:21:53 I am shopping for a new HT speaker system that also does a decent job on music CDs (budget including sub - $1500-$2000). Are there standalone subs that meet both music and HT needs in this price range (about $400-$500?). I saw a post in this forum that said the following (which makes me concerned about buying a Paradigm PS-1000): "The PS1000 is designed for high volumes and maximum boom; Energy's ES10 sub is flat response and about a thousand times lower distortion (no kidding) than the PS1000 (that's the nature of band pass subs - they are extremely high distortion from the ports). If you will be using your system for music listening then get the Energy; the quality of bass is tremendously more accurate." To go along with this as yet unnamed subwoofer, I am currently looking at Polk RT-600's for the front. I have not decided on Center or Rears, but in this price range, do you think I should stay with the same vendor (Polk) for those? Even with my limited speaker system auditioning experience, I feel the choice for center speaker is quite important. I am currently running a small Pioneer surround speaker package with the mains augmented by 2 big Vietnam era speakers (ah, those beautiful Sansui carved wood grills). My amp is a Yamaha RXV-795 with a Toshiba 3109 DVD. Thanks in advance for your comments and recommendations.
