Not all bandpass subs suffer from distortion. Distortion is usually caused by poor design and/or low quality woofers.

The Paradigm subwoofer is an excellent model that plays both loud and clean. I prefer models from Velodyne, but you're going to get more bang for the buck with Paradigm.

As with all subwoofers, improper setup is the usual cause of poor reviews/negative comments. I've done a considerable amount of research and experiments on the subject and I've found that most people have no idea how to correctly set up a subwoofer; this is why I take other peoples' opinions (on this subject in particular)with some skepticism (both good and poor reviews).

That being said I prefer the sound of the Velodyne servo-controlled subwoofers. Unfortunately these are quite expensive and thus out of your price range.

Good luck to you,
Wheel
