You can't clip the amp by having the settings off. You can be turning the volume up too loud, probably anything other than slightly past 12 O'clock on the dial.

Setting speaker size to large or small only limits the dynamic frequencly range. Large is full range, small re-directs 90 Hz and lower to sub out. Don't worry about trying to send sub out to mains. The subout carries anything below 90 Hz and the LFE channel. You can set this so that your mains get all the bass (full frequency or large) and your subwoofer also gets all 90 hz (re-directed and main bass + LFE). This is usually done by setting SW to BOTH.

Your speakers should be set on large (they just qualify with a 55 Hz low end stat).

You need a Sub to get the LFE channel. You cannot connect the RT 55's to the have the LFE channel routed to it somehow. Get a sub, even if you had towers, get a sub.
