I hope I'm not a little late to the party on this thread, but I was in the same situation as you about a couple of years ago. At that point in time, I was basically insisting on THX speakers and I bought the Triad Gold THX LCR's. I am still very satisfied by the speakers and have little to complain about.

With that being said, would I advise someone to purchase THX speakers and to eschew all others? Hardly. I believe that THX has some excellent design specifications that many high-end companies use whether or not they are part of the THX program. For example, limited vertical dispersion does wonders for cleaning up the critical mid-range area.

Yes, good audiophile equipment will probably work quite well in a home theater. The one problem area you will run into is finding matching speakers for the center and the rears. The center will be a particularly tough problem, because most audiophile speakers are somewhat large and will most likely block your display. However, this isn't the end of the world...

When it comes to matching speakers, one must remember that different parts of the room sound different from each other. In other words, you could take one of your main speakers, put it where a center speaker should go, and it will probably sound quite different. What this means is that you should feel free to experiment with many center speakers to fine one that couples well with your room and delivers the best match with your main speakers in your room. Of course, one obvious problem is that you can't move to a different room! The same should then be done with the side speakers.

Anyways, the gist of my post is... Yes, there are good THX speakers out there. And yes, you can have good home theater sound without the THX seal of approval.
