Now that's another question altogether. In terms of pure value, NHT speakers are hard to beat, and the 2.5i is one of the best examples of typical NHT bang-for-the-buck. But if you're willing to spend more, the 2.9 certainly is a better sounding speaker. It has the same array of speakers in front as the flagship NHT 3.3's but with a newer and more compact side-firing woofer, and all in a more compact enclosure. They sound great, almost as good as a 3.3, but as you have discovered, they do cost more than the 2.5i. I have 3.3's for front speakers, but I got them before the 2.9's were available or I may have opted for the 2.9's. I use the 2.5i's as surround speakers.

Click on the link below and then click on the "Hardware Reviews" link. There you will see a variety of links to reviews including these two speakers in particular. Hopefully you will be able to audition both models before you choose, though.
