Newbie sub questions

Using Mozilla/4.6 [en] (Win95; I):

Hi I am just starting out but I know I will be getting more into home theater. I have just purchased a Yamaha RX-V595 reciever and have Polk RT-55's for my mains since I am renting at the moment. I am looking for a sub and I would like some ideas as to what to look at. Ihave seen some $400 subs and not been impressed. THey sounded flat and lifeless. One of which was an M&K. Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions. I am pretty open on the price range.
