60 watt reciever better than 100 watt?

In the real world, power has nothing to do with quality - however pricing on a competitive market can make you look twice. You have to ask yourself if the Yamaha is $400 because it is being sold at a discount chain and the Marantz is $600 as it is being offered at a higher end store - or are you really getting your money's worth.

To answer your question - yes the Marantz could be better. Stuart is up on this more than I, but there are ties between the current Marantz product line (where I have limited experience) and H/K - a brand known for conservative power rating. The H/K I own defintely shares components with the Marantz line.

You need to have your dealer prove his claim by placing them side by side, tone controls flat, surround modes off... and listen.

Let your ears and wallet decide.
