Housing speakers in cabinet?

Using Mozilla/4.5 [en] (Win95; I):

The usual story - trying to place some speakers without the missus getting upset. A friend who is a carpenter has suggested making a cabinet for the TV, center and front speakers. The L&R speakers would be about 6 inches from the ground and about 1/2 meter from the center (which would be under the TV). I am concerned about two things here: 1) the bass will cause the cabinet to rattle or vibrate 2) the L&R speakers will not be apart far enough.

Anybody have any suggestions/comments?
