60 watt reciever better than 100 watt?

Also note that an amplifier (preamplifier stage) becomes most linear as it approaches its rated power. This is because all the circuitry used to attenuate the signal is now gone from the circuit and you are basically feeding the source signal straight through (hence the cleanest signal).

From this point of view, if you only need, say, 50W of power than a 60W amp should be "cleaner" sounding that a 100W amp.

Don't forget the bottom line is, take our advice and the salesman's advice and put them away while you LISTEN to both amps (at home, using software you are familiar with). Pick the one that you will be happier with.
