:::Specifications (both measured and advertised) mean so little in the real world.:::

I disagree. A subwoofers SUBJECTIVE performance is often dependent upon a particular persons listening tastes, listening habits, and perhaps various agendas that need to be placated(i.e....purchaser bias, advertising revenue).

A subwoofers OBJECTIVE performance is only dependent upon the QUALITY of the unit itself.

::: This reminds me of a friend who is still listening to his 1st generation CD player via a old 120w/ch Realistic receiver through a pair of antiquated Philips loudspeakers because "the newer stuff does not spec any better - so it does not sound any better".:::

I guess he's using some rare model of *philips* speakers that can reproduce 20hz loudly/cleanly? And I guess these speakers have relatively flat response?

Which models are these again?

And perhaps you're *friend* needs to research his claims a bit better?....it's common knowledge that older CD players generally have crappy on board DACs. I'd recommend he get a CD player that has an optical output,a good preamp with quality DACs,and a HSU subwoofer to match a pair of nice imaging bookshelfs.
