In the case of the new vs. old components, regardless of specs - the old system sounded lousy the day it was assembled. (I did not bring that part up). My friends argument goes back to THD specs of the amplifier (which are quite good on that old Realsitic as I recall) and the CD player.

Now my audiophile terms, the Realistic receiver sounds "dark" (a trait of the STA-2100) and the Pioneer CD player sounds terribly strident.

OTOH I have ***no*** idea what the THD specs are for my power amp(s), preamp, CD player and so on. They get the job done and sound good.

A bit of time has passed since I ran into my friend - but I suspect he like most people would drop their jaw when hearing my system. Now my system is no better than any other fine setup that cost enough to have an ignition switch - but a lot of time and component swapping, cable swapping and so on have been done there.

However I can just about hear it now... what are the specs? AAARGH!

Alan
