I agree with you with regard to subjective performance. So many details figure in with a system setup. My primary point is that so many place what I feel it too much emphasis on specifications (design/measured) and not their ears. I urge people to give published specifications and opintions a bit of latitude - including my own on my reviews... let's face it - we are talking about opinions and taste. I would hope when I give a positive review of an item, that leads the reader to add that item to their list of models to seriously consider.

As for those Philips loudspeakers. They were home-built due to the availibility of a woodworking shop and good know-how. They are basically a AH-477, which was a 12" three-way system which was quite inefficient but quite flat for that time. I had a pair of Philips built AH-476s (10" woofer version) and they were actually quite good.. but I would not want to put them up against anything good I own today except for a pair of AR14s I refoamed and restored.

The receiver was/is a Realistic STA2100, which was clean but rather "dark" sounding. I do not recall the model of Pioneer CD player - it was their first offering though. Indeed it was dreadful!!!

Yes the system left MUCH to be desired, a case of too much enphasis on specs and not enough ear usage.

Alan
