Gee, Tim, thanks for the great thread!:-)

I only wish I could have been here earlier to add my 2cents. (thanks Bob!)

If you are still of an open mind on the subject, Id like to give you my view on the two subs as I did have them both in my home at the same time along with other subs too.

As noted here, the HSU is a marvelous subwoofer for those on a budget who want to plumb the depths in their theater. Without a doubt its the SPL winner not only in comparison with the Titan but in comparison with many other subwoofers.

As far as TN's review of the Titan, I was very disappointed when I read that. One of the questions that it left in my mind was that of "durration". A lot of deep bass in music is of a transient nature. That the Titan could not produce deep bass over a sustained period does not come as a shock to me, but I can tell you that on real world listening material, it sounds MUCH more potent than TN's measurments would lead you to believe.

I can only tell you that when "listening" to both subs, the differences between the two subs are not all that dramatic.

Do you want a sub that plays as loud as possible for the $$$s? Get the HSU.

Do you want a sub that is VERY satisfying (even if its not the clear winner) and looks as good as it sounds (there is no shame in wanting to not look at a cardboard tube wrapped in a sock!)? Get the Titan.

But if music is imporatant here, I can tell you that the Titan is one of the most musical subs I have *ever* heard. And speaking only for myself, I'll trade the Titan's musicality for the last iota of "ommph" any day. Well, as a matter of fact, this is what I did. I bought a Titan and sent back the HSU.

As there truly is no such thing as a free lunch, if you want the SPLs of the HSU with the furniture grade finish of the Titan, you can shell out higher $$$s and buy something different. As for all things audio, it comes down you YOUR priorities.

Btw, if you havent been over to Etown, do so and find the review of the HSU 1225. The writer and I seem to be in full agreement. When it comes to subs, there is more than SPL.

Best wishes,
John
