Newbie with MASSIVE sub confusion

Hello, let me first state that i am VERY confused at about many issues involving subs. I own the denon 5700. let's say your main speakers are high quality large towers with great built in subs, lets also assume you own a very cheap poor quality sub, when listening to the tunes in 2 channels only and setting your mains to large and sub off in the menu, in this set up with the above situation i have mentioned would music sound very good? what i am asking is,are there any people out there that have high quality large towers with great built in subs that listen to music without a sub? and if yes, how is the sound? can it rival the sound of using quality mini monitor speakers set to small and using a high end sub?
Most of the hifi shop owners i speak to say that they much prefer using speakers they can set to large without any sub in the mix for music in 2 channels, they go on to say that the majority of people out there that are using subs for music in 2 channels don't even relaize the great strains involved in porperly calibrating such a setup.
My next question is can the denon 5700 handle a set up of using high quality large towers with great built in subs and no external sub for listening to music in 2 channels?
can anyone clear this confusion i have up for me, thanks for taking the time to read.
