1st pair hi-end spkrs PSB SILVER.....HELP!!!!!

Using Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; AOL 4.0; Windows 98; DigExt):
i just got my 1st high -end speakers

why are spikes needed on carpet and how high should i have the spikes?
i only have single wire hook up not bi wired....is therhi e that much difference,my amp can do bi wire..but do i really need it?
there are 4 gold plated plugs in the back of each speaker,the bottom 2 say woofer underneath.....i hooked up my single wire to the top 2....is this correct?...and does the bare wrap around wire work any less better than a male plug at the end of the wire?.......................really confused thanks for you help
