one speaker not working with cd player

Using Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows 95; DigExt):

A friend bought some speakers named welling with a sherwood receiver the front speakers work with tv and vcr but with a cd the right speaker makes a noise and then stops working also the rears with movies speech sound like they are under water he got this system for pretty cheap can anyone tell what the problem could be i think it is poor quality equipment so it could just be faulty any help would be appreciated
